Project: Va a Llover Toda La Noche
While an estimated seven million Americans are affected by Alzheimer’s, Latinos are nearly twice as likely to develop it than white Americans. I never thought my family would become part of these statistics until my mother was diagnosed. To cope with my devastation, I started a project exploring themes like grief and ambiguous loss and will expand my work to examine how the disease affects the mental health of the family and caregivers. Because this is a taboo subject among communities of color, through photography coupled with an exhibition and book, I hope to create dialogue among communities affected by the disease.
