Baltimore native Devin Allen is an award-winning, self-taught photographer and artist. He gained national attention when his photograph of the Baltimore Uprising (a response to the death of Freddie Gray in police custody) was published on the cover of Time magazine in May 2015, making Allen only the third amateur photographer to have his work featured in this way.
Project: Grandma's Home
In 2013, my grandma let me use her Best Buy credit to get my first camera, 2021 My grandma developed the early stages of dementia. I found numerous photo albums that contained 100s of family images from around the 1970s-2000s; Grandma had documented my entire life and times before. That's when I realized that I have always been around photography, and my grandma was the first photographer I ever knew. As my grandma ages, I want to create a body of work that illuminates her photography and her love for me and our entire family while she is still here.
