2020 Collection
Aidan Han, "Mask On," 2020. "We went outside today. It’s our duty to stay healthy to keep our grandparents safe."
Alexandra Marini, "Addiction.," 2020. "Everyone knows someone or some people struggling with addiction, whether it's tobacco, alcohol, gambling, or our newest threat: people feeling that everyone around them is out to get them."
Alexandra Marini, "Alone.," 2020. "A lot of at-risk youth have no way of getting the help they need right now, like help with addiction, help to feed their families, someone to be there for them at this time, help with school work, etcetera. This topic needs to be less of a hushed conversation piece."
Amy Calabrese, "Happy Birthday, Kelly," 2020. "My oldest sister, Kelly, died when she was five. Every year on her birthday and the anniversary of her death, my family and I visit her grave with green balloons and flowers; green was her favorite color. Every time we release the balloons, we say, "Happy Birthday, Kelly." This year we had to do this without my siblings because they are both at college. Next year, it will just be my parents."
Aneese Nadaf, "Untitled," 2020. "Because my dad leaves for work trips every weekend, my grandparents tend to come over and watch us. This night, my grandmother and brother sat together watching TV while my dad was busy working 5 hours away."
Aneese Nadaf, "Untitled," 2020. "Because my dad is always busy with work, he usually leaves before or during dinner time. This means I am in charge of cooking dinner; however, because I have homework, we usually have frozen meals or, on occasion, takeout pizza which is my brother's favorite."
Caitlyn Eng, "It's a Scary Time," 2020. "We try to stay positive during this pandemic, but knowing that this is our new normal has us sad sometimes. These two sisters are my younger cousins, Sienna and Emma. Emma is the little one in yellow. You can tell by Sienna's expression that she is very much over the whole COVID-19 pandemic and wishes for things to go back to normal. Emma always wants her big sister there to lean on when she's scared or worried."
Cam Magnano, "Guitar Players," 2020. "In the photo, you can see my brother, dad, and stepmom all doing some type of work. My dad plays guitar for my brother while also practicing for his job. My stepmom is in the back doing some work on her laptop, and my brother is “practicing” some ukulele."
Daniela Ruiz, "Untitled," 2020
Emily Salazar, "A Trapped Generation," 2020. "This pandemic has caused a worldwide panic, causing people to feel anxiety or, in other words, feel trapped. The younger generations are the ones who have been hit the worst. A person's young years are often filled with beautiful memories of friends and loved ones. This generation is different; they will not have those memories. They will have memories of going through a pandemic. They will have memories of having to leave their homes with a mask. They will have memories of feeling trapped."
Emma Caile, "No We in Team," 2020. "Missing out on an entire season of summer basketball, my brother is sad, to say the least. He does have hopes that things will start up again, but he misses his teammates, friends, and brothers. "I hope I can step out on the court again soon," he said to me after I took this picture."
Ethan Mills, "The Cut," 2020. "My family is always very busy with work or sports for my brothers, so to help them with that, I tend to get my haircuts at home by whoever is willing to give them. This specific time, it happened to be by my girlfriend because my mom and dad were at work. My little brother's friend, whom I've known since birth, came over. We consider him part of my family. Over the last year, I have gotten my brothers into skateboarding so they don't fight and have something to do, as I am often in charge of them when my parents are at work."
Evie Barnard, "Family Memories," 2020. "Social isolation has been especially hard for my youngest sister. To help occupy her time, my mother has begun assigning her chores to do. The most recent one involved the redecoration of our family wall. Here, my sister repositions a picture of my grandfather."
Gabby Wiedeman, "Fast, Fresh, Family," 2020. "At my job, it’s all-hands-on-deck at all times. If the front isn't busy, people working the front will help expo and drive-thru. If the kitchen isn't busy, cooks will help run food and fill the ice machines. Even though two managers left unexpectedly in the same week, we are all still doing our best and working together to make the restaurant run smoothly. My coworkers truly are my family. With only about 16 employees, I see each of my coworkers at least two or three times a week. While work can be stressful, my coworkers still put a smile on my face. As hardworking as they are, I have a lot of respect for them."
Hailey Powell, "I'm Here," 2020. "With a family of seven, there are a lot of people to look after. There are a lot of emotions jumbling and colliding during the day. Our family decided to set aside a time where we can all be together, and that is at dinner. My family and I look after each other and want to support one another. I remember the many times my mom whispered the words "I love you" while holding me close."
Ian Nguyen, "Talking to Her Mom," 2020. "They say, “There’s nothing like a mother’s love for her children,” but it could be also said, “There’s nothing like a daughter’s love for her mom.” My mom always takes a few moments to “chat” with her mom."
Imogene Croak, "Jumping," 2020. "My brothers and I have found ourselves spending hours jumping on the trampoline during quarantine. We are not allowed to leave our house because my parents are sick. Going on the tramp is the closest thing to a little getaway, so we find ourselves using it for everything from Zoom class calls to picnics and, of course, jumping!"
Isis Kirven, "Work Now Sleep Later," 2020. "My mom is an Eligibility Specialist and works six days a week. If she’s not sleeping during her break time, she’s leading investigations from her bed."
Jade Fisher, "The Cool Side of the Pillow," 2020. "My brother, Landyn, is 11 and has a hard time waking up in the morning for school. He groans and rolls to his other side, pulling the blankets closer to his head as the cold breeze rolls in through his window. He falls back asleep."
Leena Yesley, "Working from Home," 2020. "My father is working from home during the times of the coronavirus. He works the entire day with his door closed. The only time we get to see him is at dinner. While working, he can look at pictures on his wall that we drew."
Madeline Burroughs, "My Little Watchdog," 2020. "My mom is home alone for most of the day. My dog likes to keep her company until it's time to pick us up from school. While my mom works away on the computer, Lucie makes sure no squirrels or birds distract her."
Mar Rivas, "Chiquilla and Tiliche," 2020. "My family lost our house in a wildfire. Our dogs, Chiquilla and Tiliche, which we kept outside in our backyard, no longer stay with us because we live in an apartment building. Once a day either my mom or dad (it's usually my dad) visits our dogs where our house used to be and feeds them. After we lost our house and were displaced, one of my dogs gave birth to 7 puppies; we were unable to keep the puppies but kept their parents (our dogs). They've been through so much with us and I'm grateful to still have them in my life."
Mikaylie Kiyomura, "Computer Light," 2020. "After the whole family has already gone to bed, my mom stays up to finish work and other tasks. Whenever I see her, she is sitting in the dark with nothing but her computer screen lighting up the room. My mom is known for staying up late to do assignments and falling asleep on the couch."
Mikaylie Kiyomura, "Sunday Dinners," 2020. "Every Sunday, my family goes to dinner with my cousin's family. It has been our tradition for about a year, and it means a lot to everyone since they do not live close. Due to COVID-19, we did not think we would be able to have dinner. Instead, both families ordered take-out and sat six feet apart."
Nicole Blevins, "Work from Home," 2020. "The nice thing about my parents being home-builders is that they are able to work on projects in our home too. It is not often that my siblings and I get to see or talk to them throughout the day, so when they do work at home, it is nice to be able to spend time with them."
Noah Chun, "The Job," 2020. "My dad works long hours at his job and often gets home pretty late at night; however, even when he comes home, he still has work to do and often stays up late to finish up. My mom also has a lot of work, and she often checks for any last-minute work emails before she goes to bed."
Noah Lawrence, "Tried-and-True Tennis Shoes," 2020. "More time at home means more time to cut the grass, according to the neighborhood Homeowners Association. Even if this mundane chore is accompanied by the incessant nagging from the HOA, it still gives my dad a chance to wear a pair of sneakers that have great sentimental value to him. When my older brother headed off to college almost ten years ago, he had to leave a few of his possessions behind, including this very pair of shoes. "I fear no grass," he said in typical 'dad' fashion. "It makes mowing the grass a bit easier. I mean, shoes would do that for you," he added humorously. So even when he has to begrudgingly complete the tedious and tiresome tasks of mowing and weed whacking, he gets a bi weekly reminder of his son, who now lives over 1,000 miles away in Iowa."
Olivia Corey, "Family Garden," 2020
Phoebe Nicault, "Don't Go," 2020. "Being a father of five girls is a difficult job. It means splitting your time between everyone and still finding time for yourself. My dad is spending quality time with my youngest sister but still paying attention to me. My dad is often gone, so my sister is holding on to him because she does not want him to leave."
Tigerlily Hopson, "Bubbles," 2020. "At my dad’s house, I have a responsibility to care for my little brother, and I do everything from giving him a bath to reading him Harry Potter to making sure he eats his vegetables to letting him curl up in my arms when he is feeling sad. When he was born, at first it felt like another hurdle because he has a different mom than me, but I realized he has made my family bigger and brought some more love into my life."
